Macworld 2006 keynote was 1.5 hours long, with only 2 surprises... iMac Intel and MacBook Pro Intel, so if Macworld 2007 keynote is 2 hours long it must mean more then 2 major annoucements. Here is what I see happening:
Steve will start by talking about retail stores (showing the new Fifth Ave store) and how many people came in during the Holiday quarter. Then he will tell us how much revenue the stores made during that quarter. Steve will then say how much total revenue Apple has made during the year, because the CFO of Apple (Peter Oppenheimer) doesn't want to confuse any analyst who many be attending or watching. Steve will go on to talk about iPods and how well it's doing with market share, how many they sold durning the holidays and which car companies are now on board with iPod, he may even talk about Nike+iPod. DON'T EXPECT ANY iPod UPDATES. Steve will then talk about iTunes and how many downloads it has. We may see some more movie studios come on board and even the Beatles on iTunes. Then he will talk about iTV , give a demo and annouce that it will be shipping today or February. After the iTV Demo, Steve will say that the rest of the time will be spent on the Mac. He will then go into iLife '07 and give a demo of iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, Garageband and tell you about iDVD but no demo because of time. Then he will show us iWork '07 with new Keynote features and themes with updated charts and Pages plus a new application (maybe Charts) After iLife and iWork he will talk about Leopard and maybe show some new "Top Secret" apps since Vista is lauching for consumers on 1/30/07. I expect him to release Leopard at WWDC not at MacWorld. He will update Aperture. He will then announce some third party software from Adobe (Premiere and Photoshop) and Microsoft (Office) which will come out and demo their new products. Then Steve will talk about the iMac and Mac Mini and update both. I don't expect any updates on Laptops. Then the one more thing will be the iPhone (iChat Mobile) and Steve will talk about the years of development and partnerships and demo the product by doing a video chat with someone (Phil) then he will thank everyone at Apple who worked on the product and thank everyone for coming to MacWorld. So if you compare last year's updates with this year's you will see 2 additional products demos iTV and iChat Mobile, this is what will take the extra 1/2 hour. Longhorn is code name, The product name is Vista you will not see a third name for windows vista. Just like Windows XP I think was called Whistler (code name).
Just about all companies give there product a code name and then a release name once it's ready for the retail stores or a public beta like you see windows vista.
Indeed. I sort of forget, but at what point did Apple decide to start making the "code names" part of the official name of the commercial product? I'm thinking it must have been with 10.2 (I don't remember them publicizing Cheetah as the name of 10.0 or Puma as the name of 10.1).
I guess it's almost a necessity given the unique product naming issues with OS X. On one hand, Apple is basically limited to doing single-point version increases with each update to OS X (because if they actually were to jump from 10.x to, say, 11.0, the OS X name would no longer mean anything). But if you just advertise "Mac OS X 10.5", it's hard to get people too excited about that. So I guess it makes sense for Apple to go ahead and really push the cat codename stuff as the final product name. Also, probably easier for the average consumer to just remember Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, etc. than individual version numbers.

People said the same thing with touch screens in airplanes yet the top-of-the-line fighters have touch-screen control. Admittedly, they don't use the touch screens as their flight controllers, but when you consider the volume and velocity of their decision-making, it shows it can be done.

i'm trying to put all of this core 2 duo hype into perspective. there have been rumors about new pro's for the last 2 months. at this rate, no one will ever purchase a new mac notebook.
prove to me how a core 2 duo chip will make my EVERYDAY computing that more productive compared to a core duo.
I stand by my point that you will be only shaving seconds of waiting for your stuff to run. a real wank...

So, we can que up 10-12 movies we want to watch for the month and in the background my mac downloads them and then either stores them on this yet to be anounced product or onto my mac... Then this new Airport(now, available in 1-3 weeks) can then stream it to my TV. This does make a lot more sense now.
If 88 percent (http://www.jdpower.com/corporate/news/releases/pressrelease.asp?ID=2006135) of households have cable or satellite -- and a big chunk of those have access to PPV or on-demand new releases -- I don't understand why an iTunes movie-to-your-TV service is such a big hoopty-do.
Unless Apple goes to a subscription-based service that essentially replaces my cable, this doesn't really give me anything I don't already have other than the ability to watch a movie on an iPod.
I'm excited, I guess, because it's new and a different direction for Apple, but none of the rumors I've seen about what's coming next week show much "think different."

When customers cant access the website they want, take classes to learn MS office only on PC's because the mac version is different, cant use all the same peripherals as windows users (not as bad as it used to be for sure) etc, apple will grow slower than the bigger PC companies.

Mac Pro

Apple Phone (or Not?)
The one rumor that has received the greatest exposure is, of course, the Apple branded phone (formerly the iPhone (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061218064022.shtml)). Talk of an Apple-branded cell phone has been ongoing for years, however.
In when asked directly (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/09/20020911210852.shtml) "Will there be an iPhone?", Steve Jobs replied "One never knows. We don't usually discuss products we haven't announced." In when questioned again about an Apple phone, Steve Jobs stated (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/05/20030529030024.shtml) that they did not "feel they could add much value to current cell phones."
The Apple Phone rumor flickered to life again in February 2006 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/02/20060203203837.shtml) when research group UBS said "not to rule out an Apple-branded cell phone later this year". PiperJaffray made a bolder statement (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/03/20060317152445.shtml) in March 2006 with a 75% chance of a iPhone in the next 12 months. Similar claims came from a J.P. Morgan analyst (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/03/20060319140832.shtml) that "chatter about the [Apple Phone] is all over the food chain".
What finally triggered worldwide attention can be traced back to this Commercial Times report (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/11/20061115090741.shtml) that Taiwan's Hon Hai has received a 12 million unit contract for the rumored Apple phone to be released in the first half of 2007. While regular MacRumors readers might realize that these Taiwanese supply reports have been wrong in the past, the proposed time-frame correlated (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060915182716.shtml) with an earlier ThinkSecret report also pointing to "early 2007" for the release. While nothing would preclude Apple from announcing a phone at Macworld for a later launch, the evidence for a Macworld launch remains mostly speculative.
Mac Pro
Appleinsider suggested in October (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/10/20061025231946.shtml) that an 8-Core Mac Pro was ready to launch as early as November 2006. While this did not take place, an upcoming 2.0GHz quad-core chip (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2326) due in January will be priced at a reasonable $690/chip, similar to the current 2.66GHz dual-core Woodcrest that is currently offered in Mac Pros.
A recent Macscoop report (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/20061229234528.shtml) claimed that the 8-core Mac would be on track for a January release.
iTV
Apple surprised many when they revealed the iTV in September (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060912161621.shtml) at the "Showtime" media event. The $299 device offers a living room appliance that interfaces your media content to your television. A brief overview was provided, but the final shipping product was not promised until the first quarter of 2007.
Many expect Apple will provide more details of the iTV at Macworld.
Leopard
Leopard was first previewed (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060807161421.shtml) in August, revealing Time Machine, Spaces, Core Animation, and more (http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/).
Over the following months, only a few additional features have been revealed (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/10/20061024174114.shtml), and no word of the "secret" features Apple has held back from their public preview.
The latest minor feature revealed has been the use of XAR (http://macgeek.freeflux.net/blog/archive/2006/12/30/macos-x-10-5-new-package-format-xar.html) for Leopard's package format.
Apple would likely demonstrate Leopard again at Macworld San Francisco, but the final release is not expected until "Spring 2007".
New Displays

$1 cases on eBay is good enough to protect from scratches IMO.
Any case that covers it protects from scratches other than slides, I think. :confused:
We need more of a definition than prevents scratches. That slims it down to most cases.

My friend and I actually built the stand our selves, it serves to provide room for me to slide the keyboard under and just to elevate the imac in general, so it's more at eye level.
What's it made out of? And I presume there's a third leg holding the back of the iMac foot up? Otherwise I'd be rather concerned about it falling out of balance during an intense typing session :o
