I've been following MR for quite a while and finally decided to register in the forum since I have a question (will post it in another thread). Anyway, I thought I'll just mention about my switch to the Mac platform as an introduction.
I have used Macintoshes "for real" the first time about six years ago. Then, ever since I got that student job at a mostly-Mac internet company four years ago, I got to work on Macs occasionally. I really liked them, but most of my work is Unix-based (FreeBSD/Linux), so using a Linux desktop was way more convenient. However, after MacOS X was announced, I knew I was going to get a Mac eventually :) . I remember I first was a bit disappointed with the interface because I was used to OS 9, but it grew on me (and my Mac colleagues). During the last two years, I thought more seriously about getting a Mac, but it was only this year that I borrowed a left-over G3/266 from the office and started working on it at home.
I was positively surprised that I actually could do a lot with OS X even on this old machine (especially after I bumped up the memory to 224 MB). OK, application startup times are quite long, but I do alot of work on the terminal, so I can still live with it. Initially, I made an effort to use the Mac instead of my 266 MHz PC. Now the PC has been disassembled and sits in a closet, and I do everything on the Mac. Everything except Windows software development, which I still have to do in the office. I hope to get my first own Mac soon and settle this issue with VirtualPC :) and even more importantly do music composing/production as well.
Anyway, just wanted to share this. Sorry it got a bit long. Hope nobody got bored :).

It's not the number of Megapixels, but the sensor size. Jamming that many MPs into a tiny sensor will not give you a good camera
True.
An 8MP cam with with a better lens will destroy it.
Cameraphones will always be a bit gimped purely because of their size and multifunction nature.
I had the 12MP SE Satio for a couple of months and it was good for a phone but my old 7MP compact camera with a better lens blew it away.

My little 1gb shuffle works great as a key and as a place for music. I store my important documents, my software keys, a copy of my encryption/decryption software for my keys, and I still have room for music and audio books.

I'm playing it! :D
I actually was in the original beta for Uru Live when it was still an Ubisoft project back in mid-to-late 2003. When I heard it was being resurrected (and ported to Intel Macs), I got very excited, and actually got into the new beta as well. I'm enjoying it quite a lot, it's definitely quite cool for a Myst fan to be able to wander the caverns of D'ni, and the user community is very passionate (to the point of framing most discussions within public areas of the game as "in cavern," or role-playing as if the experience is real) and helpful (there are always people willing to help with the couple group puzzles or give you hints/assistance if you're stuck).

The SL disc you have may not have the version of OS X needed for your MBA. MBA shipped after SL was released this e.g. 10.6.0 may not work. Call Apple and ask them to send you a replacement installation media, it shouldn't cost more than 20$ or so.

If you don't know what it is, don't delete it.
Yes, I know that. That is why I am asking on here if any one knows what they are and if they are safe to delete....

depends on what OS you are on now I guess.
i just upgraded my ipod touch and also had to restore a couple of times. apparently if you restore from a backup, it causes problems with the new jailbreak... can anyone confirm that? i ended up having to set up as a new (so i lost all settings and game saves) to get some jailbroken apps to work.

I am planning to Switch (upgrade) from PC to Mac but I still need to run some PC programs.
The only thing I hear about Virtual PC is that its terrible slow.
I am planning to put 2 Gigas of ram on my new Imac 20".
1 giga dedicated to the Virtual PC.
Does anybody has an experience if by doing this I should see a lot of performace Gain on Virtual PC?
Iam not planning to run games just normal applications (some design an graphics) but I need to run them on PC envieroment to ensure compatibility.
Thanks in advance for advice.
What graphics programs do you need to run on the PC side? Chances are it's something that requires a lot of power - meaning it's probably going to be ridiculously slow.
My guess is that you'll be better off designing in OS X. Then you can test the file (or whatever you need to do) in Virtual PC to ensure compatibility.

One of the other rumor sites (AppleInsider I think) was speculating that there could be a 'secret' announcement to be made today by Steve at the Final Cut Pro meeting.

The Denison unit seems good enough, but I don't like the dock....bulky.
I'd prefer the solution Monster has come up with, that is, just a cable to connect to the iPod...no dock.
I wonder what the prices are like for the Denison ice>Link is. $200 for the Monster solution seems pretty steep.
You can get the Denision unit without the dock too, just the cable. Same price either way though.

Try SafariSpeed (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24331) to reduce the time it takes to load pages. It's free, and you'll likely notice a vast improvement.
SafariSpeed definitely did the trick! Thanks for your help. Why would they have incorporated a delay in page load on purpose?
I've tweaked Camino some so it works better, and since they seem pretty much the same except for some differences in appearance, I'll probably play around with them for a while and decide.
The Safarish theme suggested is still very buggy (e.g., the find bar is huge), so it looks like I'll be ditching Firefox and just picking up a RSS reader. By "TBE doesn't work properly" I mean that half of the options don't show up in preferences.

10.6.5 from what I can tell
Custom 10.6.5 made specifically for that model line. As far as I know, there are only 10.6.0 and 10.6.3 retail Snow Leopard disks.

Another vote here for the Seagate Barracuda if you're looking for a high-capacity drive. I've always found them to be very quiet and reliable.
If the extra storage isn't critical and you fancy a performance boost, pick up a 10,000 rpm 74GB Western Digital Raptor.

I'm getting ready to head to Florida with my kids and wife. I am so looking forward to this vacation.
I just totaled up my hours that I worked for the past two months. I've worked 7 days a week 70+ hours of work for the past 2 months. This week I've started working at 6:00am, and finishing up at 11:00pm (with a break for lunch and making dinner).
