That's kind of what's happening, no? In this case, the driver is picking up the details through Software Update hitting the Apple config website.
Not quite. I was proposing something more automatic, without users having to respond to prompts and wait for installers to run.

I know that some people want precise control over what gets installed, but these kinds of trivial updates seem like bother we could do without. Imagine if you launched iTunes, clicked iTunes Store, and it said "The list of top weekly hits is out of date. Click here to install an iTunes update". That would be awful! Instead, we expect it to fetch the latest data automatically, so I wondered if O.S. updates for camera data and printer drivers could be handled that way too.

"Any ideas will be very much appreciated..."

    I don't have a 1082, but just some thoughts...

First, connect the 1082, get everything powered up.

Next, open Apple System Profiler (look in your Utilities folder for "System Profiler")

With System Profiler open, look on the left side under "hardware". You should see "firewire". Click on it one time.

What does it say in the right window?

If it doesn't show any connections at all, it MIGHT be your cables. I'd suggest a firewire "9-to-6-pin" cable from "monoprice.com":
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10301

If it DOES show the presence of the 1082 "on the bus", but the 1082 doesn't seem responsive, it MIGHT be the drivers.

Finally, does the 1082 have it's own power supply? Are you using it?

Again, don't have one of these myself, and can only offer some thoughts.

Try this thread. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31091) It's a discussion about setting up the security features in Linksys routers.

Basically, you're going to do two things: one, turn on WEP encryption, to keep your data secure; and two, disable SSID broadcasting, to prevent just any schlub with a wireless card from seeing your network.

These two things won't make your network hack-proof, but it's enough to keep out the casual network snoopers and enough to tell more advanced snoopers "This is a closed network, look elsewhere for an easier target."

    Hi guys,

Beware: horror story lays ahead. You're all going to be smacking your heads and thinking I'm a total idiot. Which I am.

Back story: Macbook from late 2007. In perfect working order, battery was still great and everything ran smoothly. I am usually VERY careful with my computer.

Saturday night, I had fallen asleep on my bed with my computer on next to me, and a half a pint of water on my bedside table. My cat decided it would be a good idea to jump up onto my bedside table, and knocked the glass of water over. Water splashed onto my bed and onto my keyboard. I was asleep on the other side of the bed so I didn't realise until I woke up about 4 hours later.

I realised what must have happened and called my boyfriend (he's a tech assistant at his uni). He told me to remove the battery and set the laptop upside down to rest in the sun, and then to look up what to do on Google using my phone. So I Googled "OMG I SPILLED WATER ON MY MACBOOK" and read everyone's advice on what to do. The weird part is that everything I've read has said that people's computers turned off either immediately or a few minutes after the water spilled onto it. My computer didn't turn off - in fact, it was completely frozen. The time still read 4:30am when I looked at it at 8:30am. The power button didn't work when I tried to turn it off so I had to just remove the battery.

    LONG STORY SHORT:

Water spills on keyboard, computer doesn't turn off but just freezes. What does this mean? What are the chances that my computer will be okay after a few days of drying out? I'm assuming that nothing shorted out immediately because the thing stayed on. But that could just be wishful thinking.

My computer is over 3 years old so is obviously completely out of warranty. I can't afford to replace the keyboard or, God forbid, the logic board.

maybe you should focus more on gaining contract work and be less worried about people trying to copy your work.

Most companies are willing to pay for the work they like ... removing your watermark is more trouble than it is worth.

I totally agree. People waste more money and time trying to protect work without realizing that the value is NOT in the actual work, but the idea that goes behind it. The legitimate people that you want to work with probably won't steal. The others will, and there isn't much you can do about it without turning off the former. If I were to receive a heavily watermarked design, I would think... "gee, this guy has trust issues".

That being said, the only way (without involving attorneys, watermarks and low-rez crap), is to print out and photograph the work. Though, if done poorly, it will have a negative reflection on the work.

Ah. Thanks for the explanation. I was trying to figure out why they would be doing this from the individual back to the servers.

I can see why this is such a screwy process. I guess I always thought (assumed) they were threading it but now that you mentioned it I see exactly what you mean.

One thing that doesn't quite make since to me though is why does it rely on networking if it's all local? I know this part must be true because I find that folding frequently crashes and/or becomes corrupted when I change networks.

It seems like this should also make it friendlier to other tasks being run on the system since it will be one multithreaded task possibly making it more flexible. I know right now I frequently have to pause folding or re-nice it if I plan on running any large streaming clients like Netflix.

This is all speculation, as I don't even run the program, but here goes: The only reason I can imagine they would use MPI at the client side as opposed to threading it is that they are already using MPI to communicate back with the main servers. If this is the case, it would be relatively easy (from a learning-curve point of view) to continue on toward using this to communicate at the client side. If you're a grad student who's never written anything multithreaded, it's easier to stick with what you know than to experiment with something new. Likewise, going the multiprocess w/MPI route, you don't have to worry about shared memory or mutexes, so it's easier for the noob programmer to implement. Otherwise, I see no tangible benefit for using MPI like this.

I wrote cluster software with lammpi before I ever began writing multithreaded apps. I can attest that the MPI route takes less brain power. The multithreading route may be simpler to code, but there's a lot more to think about. Even in the professional field, I was the only person at my previous company who was not afraid of multithreading.

Some macs (I think including yours) don;t support hard drives any bigger than 127GB.

I think if you put the drive in a firewire or usb external enclosure, the enclosure chipset will take care of that, so you can hook up a 300GB drive if you want.

About time wireless sync came to iOS 4. As good as the iPhone is it is really archaic to have to plug in to sync everything. We shouldn't have to over pay for MobileMe to wireless sync in our own homes!

Edit: I stumbled onto this, but it says the panel type is TN, not IPS, does this mean it will have horrible viewing angles?
    LG Monitor (http://www.lg.com/uk/it-products/monitors/LG-led-monitor-W2486L.jsp)

Yes. Horrible viewing angles and overall terrible image quality in comparison to IPS or VA panels.

There are no LED backlit IPS panels other than the Apple Cinema. If you really want an LED (why exactly?) you have no other option.
